A resounding “No” to the mine, the new highway diversion, and the privatization of our beaches

Saturday August 9, 2015

Cabo San Lucas, B.C.S.: No to the new highway diversion. No to the pollution and privatization of our beaches. And no to massive toxic mining operations in Baja California Sur. These were the messages delivered by informed members of civil society during demonstrations in Los Cabos.

Last August 8, an informational meeting was held in Plaza Amelia Wilkes, Cabo San Lucas, by citizens concerned about the new highway diversion, the possible privatization of beaches, and the situation of the open-pit mine that threatens our state, collecting around 6000 signatures during the day.

A number of citizens expressed their opinions and concerns during the meeting, with a positive response from those in attendance.

Dozens of people marched carrying large banners and placards reading “No to the mine, Yes to life” and “No to the new highway diversion” along the main streets and avenues of Cabo San Lucas. Participants shouted slogans against the authorization of the toxic open-pit mine planned for development in Sierra de la Laguna, which would endanger the health of the inhabitants of La Paz, Todos Santos, and Los Cabos.

Another slogan was a resounding No to plans to divert the transpeninsular highway away from the coast and thus effectively block the few remaining access points to the beaches.
If you are interested in signing the petition, tables have been set up in the courtyard of Los Cabos City Hall.
